This recording was made during January 1978, at Palaja, Carcassonne, and remains a fine introduction to the polyphonic choral music of Marc-Antoine Charpentier. The Leçons de Ténèbres were a specifically French genre that grew out of the readings taken from the Lamentations of Jeremiah during Holy Week. In performance they often were combined (as here) with meditations inspired by letters in the Hebrew alphabet, in this case 'LAMED' and 'ALEPH'. Originally censured by Catholic clergy for 'transforming into an entertainment that which has been created to create in the Christian soul a holy and salutary sadness', Charpentier's Leçons became very popular during the reign of Louis XIV. Even if you're new to this composer and genre, you should find this disc intensely moving.

It's beautifully recorded and effectively sung by René Jacobs' Concerto Vocale, supported by a small continuo group. The acoustic setting is just right: there's a pleasing but not overpowering natural reverberation, ensuring that inner vocal lines (especially altos and tenors) are clearly audible. Jacobs is well known as an authority on French polyphonic choral music, and though his realization commands strong specialist appeal, it's also well worth hearing even if this isn't your normal area of interest. Sonically, it's finer than the Virgin Veritas release (recorded in 1994) by Il Seminario Musicale directed by Gérard Lesne--but having vocal texts in the booklet (Harmonia Mundi includes a useful introduction to the music by Jacobs) is a definite plus.
