'Lent' (1985)

An episode of the long-running 'Screen Two' dramatic series from Brit television, featuring thirteen-year-old Graham McGrath as Paul.

'I recently came by a 25-year-old VHS of this film, and found it every bit as good as I remembered. Yes, it betrays its origins as a stage- play (which won Michael Wilcox a London Critics Circle Theatre Award in 1983) in that there is little 'action' and in the most superficial way not very much happens. Yet the themes are the great late-Shakespearean ones of reconciliation and redemption: the orphaned Paul (McGrath) begins by struggling against authority and against the changes in his growing body, but comes, through the unobtrusive guidance and love of two elderly mentors, to understand that the future belongs to him and that, in the last words he utters in the film, 'there's so much to look forward to!'

The dramatic situation is developed so as to allow Paul's problems to be examined from many different angles; although the only child in the company of four elderly people in a boarding school during the Easter holidays, he is nevertheless the owner of the school and frequently finds himself cast in a position of responsibility over the often childish adults.

Oddly for a film in which religion plays no part (apart from a disparaging remark about a boring sermon), its theme is a deeply religious one, the darkness of Lent giving way to the redemption of Easter. The other great structural element is the Elgar violin concerto, a piece which haunts Paul, although only the 78s of the slow movement survive in the school record collection. The final scene of the film, a night-time birdwatching trip, is accompanied and eventually swallowed up by the triumphal ending of the whole concerto; the lost discs are presumed to be found, just as Paul has found again the life that he lost on the death of his parents.

McGrath and Andrews are wonderful, as is Fabia Drake in the 8th decade of her career; Constance Chapman is believably ghoulish as the murder- obsessed matron, responsible for a superb comic sequence involving a possibly-poisoned cup of Bovril, while David Langton excels as a decent man driven to behave badly by loyalty to his appalling wife.'

This is possibly an nth-generation copy of the tape the above reviewer refers to, and although not quite the quality we strive to share here at TBS, it is rare enough that it is worth the trouble.

Danny Arno Undercover...
More intelligence agent freelancing for the FBI, DEA, Department of Justice, Interpol... and for places like Fullstar Buick of San Diego, where he was once salesman of the month. Can also be found across the nation on the piano bar circuit with 'The Musical Stylings of Danny Banks.' Born and bred in New Jersey, he grew up torn between career aspirations in acting and law enforcement. Ultimately, he chose both.

Barbara Arno
Danny's wife and personal muse, she is employed as a C.I. (Confidential Informant) for the same government agencies Danny works for. Loves danger, Danny, and her three kids - but not necessarily in that order. Does all she can to provide a normal, healthy environment for her family, which means plenty of home-cooked meals, helping the kids with their homework, and strict rules against playing in the munitions closets.

Celeste Arno
At 16 years old, the oldest child in the Arno family. Has only recently dropped her contention that she's in the family because of a mix-up at the hospital. An often reluctant but always effective weapon in her father's undercover personnel arsenal. An insufferable romantic, she sometimes lets her heart distract her from her mission objectives.

Ruby Arno
At only 14 years old, she's already Daddy's little over-achiever. The family optimist, she provides a consistent rallying cry even in the face of the bleakest of situations. The middle child in a family that moves often (seventeen times in the last four years, and counting), she still somehow manages to become class president, cheerleading captain, and/or homecoming queen at every new school she goes to.

Chance Arno (Michael Angarano)
At only 11 years, old, he's the youngest Arno. Proud to be his father's 'Number Two Man.' A born con man, this chip off Danny's shoulder can lie with the best of them, ultimately granting the family access to underworld communities the Feds can only dream about cracking. Likes typical kids stuff such as pizza, riding his bike, and the feel of a NAGRA surveillance wire under his 'New Jersey is for Lovers' T-shirt.
